Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Lisa Thompson, provides life saving dialysis to a Golden Retriever

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

merry2.jpgCARROLLTON, Texas, May 13, 2011 – Fortunately for “Merry”, a six-year-old golden retriever and his family, the Center for Veterinary Specialty Care was equipped to deliver Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), a form of short term hemodialysis to pets. In fact they are the only hospital in the region offering this life saving treatment for kidney failure.

Pets have become members of the family and more pet owners are choosing specialized care. Available in only a few select locations outside of a university setting, The Center for Veterinary Specialty Care is one such facility, providing the latest technologies and specialized care by board-certified veterinarians in the areas of neurology, neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery, internal medicine, and emergency and critical care.

Dr. Lisa Thompson, a board-certified specialist in Emergency and Critical Care just completed a three day round of dialysis on “Merry” who is also a cancer survivor.   This procedure requires a team of doctors and nurses to monitor these patients closely, 24- hours a day, and operate the sophisticated equipment precisely. Dialysis was used to remove toxins from the blood because his kidneys were too sick to perform this function normally.  Dialysis does not treat or repair the kidneys themselves. Instead, it serves as a bridging measure by re-establishing and maintaining metabolic balance, in order to give damaged kidneys the opportunity to repair themselves and to recover function.
